How to Clean Invisalign Clear Aligners

Are you wondering how to clean Invisalign clear aligners? With regular cleaning, your aligners remain discreet, so most people won’t know you’re working on your smile. Plus, clean aligners help keep treatment on track by helping you maintain top oral health.

One of the best aspects of Invisalign is you can take out aligners to clean them, eat, and brush your teeth. However, the thin SmartTrack material is meant to last temporarily. Thus, they won’t hold up well to abrasive cleaning methods.

Fortunately, it’s easy to clean Invisalign clear aligners. With a little practice, it becomes part of your daily routine.

Invisalign Cleaning Products

Invisalign’s cleaning system includes cleaning crystals and a sterilizing tray. Plus, they now offer unique carrying cases to protect your aligners when you take them out.

These work very well, but you can also use more ordinary methods if you prefer.

Clear Liquid Soap

If you don’t have Invisalign’s cleaning products, clear liquid soap works fine. However, avoid soap with added colors, dyes, or scents that might stain or make your aligners taste funny. Plain clear liquid soap is best.

Retainer Cleaning Products

As another alternative to Invisalign cleaning products, you may use cleaning products made for delicate retainers.

Remember: Products to clean retainers are not the same as those used to clean dentures. Both denture cleaners and toothpaste are too abrasive on the thin aligners.

After treatment with Invisalign or braces, you’ll need to wear a retainer. So, you’ll already have a supply of cleaning retainer products on hand.

When you come for your consultation, we’ll discuss our recommendations and what cleaning products we recommend.

Hot Liquids Can Warp Aligners

Another benefit of Invisalign is the thin SmartTrack material is an exact, comfortable fit. However, each set of aligners is meant to last about two weeks. Then, you’ll wear the next set of aligners in your custom plan.

Since they are thin, the aligners are subject to warping if you use hot water to clean them. Also, it’s best to take them out whenever you eat or drink anything other than cool water.

Some Foods and Drinks Can Stain Aligners

Recently, we looked at foods to avoid with Invisalign and braces. In particular, it’s necessary to avoid foods that can stain the clear aligners. There, you can see a list of foods and drinks that tend to be staining.

However, it’s easy enough to take out the aligners when you eat or drink. Therefore, you can enjoy the foods you love throughout treatment. On the other hand, it’s always a good idea to limit sugary, sticky foods.

Use a Protective Case

Always, carry your protective case with you to keep aligners clean when you take them out. Then, you can help prevent bacteria growth and resulting bad breath.

After taking your aligners out, rinse them off if possible. Then, place the aligners where you will always remember to carry them with you.

By forming this habit, you can avoid losing them and requiring a replacement set.

Recently, we also shared a blog about how to properly insert Invisalign aligners.

A Soft Toothbrush Just for Cleaning Aligners

Each night, gently brush your aligners with a toothbrush reserved only for this process. Using cool tap water, gently brush all the surfaces to help remove buildup.

By choosing a soft bristle brush, you can avoid scratching or scuffing up the plastic.

Below are the easy steps for cleaning.

How to Clean Aligners

Here are the easy steps to clean aligners:

  1. Rinse your aligners under the tap. (never use hot water)
  2. Use your designated soft brush and clear soap to brush the aligners on all surfaces.
  3. Rinse the aligners again until clean.
  4. Put your aligners back in for the night.

As you sleep, your aligners will continue to move your teeth gradually. In the morning, rinse your aligners before inserting them for the day.

Cleaning On the Go

While on the go, carry a soft travel toothbrush along with you. Occasionally, use the brush in a sink to keep the aligners clean. If you forget your brush, rinsing them will suffice. For example, if your aligners accidentally contact food or drinks, rinse them off when you get the chance.
