When should my child see an orthodontist?
We’ll look at the best time to begin. By getting an early start, an orthodontist can spot any red flags early. Then, they can provide early prevention so that kids get the best start at a lifetime of healthy smiles.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children see an orthodontist no later than age seven. By age seven, kids will have some permanent teeth. Therefore, an orthodontist can assess if there is any need for orthodontic treatment.
Often, kids won’t need treatment. But if they do, early treatment can prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult. Thus, it can greatly lessen the cost over time. More importantly, it can significantly improve oral health from an early age. Before age seven, it’s a good idea to consult an orthodontist if you notice misaligned teeth or anything of concern. Also, if your child is age eight and hasn’t seen an orthodontist, it’s never too late to get started. With orthodontic treatment, we can ensure a beautiful, healthy, functional bite for people of all ages.
Should I See a Dentist or Orthodontist?
Around your child’s first birthday, it’s time to see a pediatric dentist.
The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend getting started when the first tooth comes in and no later than age two.
Your family dentist can spot any warning signs as they help maintain oral health. Many times, they may recommend an orthodontist if they notice misaligned teeth or jaws. Many times, you don’t need a referral and can seek an orthodontist’s help on your own. Misalignments called malocclusions are the specialty of orthodontists. After dental school, orthodontists continue their education with an orthodontic residency program for two to three years. During this time, they learn about the best practices to align smiles perfectly.
A small percentage of orthodontists go on to become board certified with the American Board of Orthodontics. For example, our own Dr. Michael Skrobola is board-certified, reflecting the highest level of commitment to providing top-quality service.

Phase One and Phase Two Treatment
Early treatment is called Phase One treatment and generally begins around age eight or nine. During this time, an orthodontist can guide the jaws’ growth to make room for teeth and prevent malocclusions. So, it’s a foundation for a lifetime of healthy, beautiful smiles.
The most common malocclusion (or bad bite) is an overbite, which can be a problem if it is pronounced. Other types include underbites, crossbites, open bites, and more. See more about Phase One treatment at Bracesetter here.
Next, Phase Two treatment starts around age 11 or older. At this age, kids have all their permanent teeth, and treatment with braces can begin. During this time, we can precisely guide the teeth to the ideal positions. Then, kids can complete treatment with a fantastic smile to enjoy into adulthood.
