How to Properly Insert Invisalign Aligners

This time, we’re looking at how to properly insert Invisalign aligners. After a few times, it will become second nature, but at first, it takes a little practice.

Never Bite the Aligners Into Place

Invisalign aligners are made of very thin SmartTrack material. The specially engineered material is BPA-free and precisely fits your unique smile.

SmartTrack material makes Invisalign more comfortable and easy to put on and take off. However, the material is somewhat fragile and meant to last temporarily. So, care must be taken when placing aligners.

Remember, never force the aligners are bite down on them to fit them into place. Doing so can damage the aligners, requiring a replacement. Sometimes, it’s tempting to bite down before the aligners are seated in place fully but resist the temptation.

To Insert: Start at the Front and Work Back

To properly insert Invisalign aligners, start by fitting them to your front teeth first. Once the aligner is centered in place on your front teeth, you can gently guide it down over the teeth toward the molars down on each side. Using gentle pressure, guide the aligner into place on each side of your mouth until it snaps into place.

Repeat the process on your top and lower jaw until both aligners are in place. When inserting a new set of aligners, there may be a little space between the aligner and the top of your teeth. However, avoid the temptation to bite down without a Chewie in place. (see next)

Always, treat your aligners gently, being sure to work out any fold and avoid forcing or tearing them.

If you do break an aligner and need a replacement, contact us right away to keep treatment on track.

Invisalign Chewies

To properly insert Invisalign aligners, you can bite down gently on a soft Chewie for a few seconds.

These soft orthodontic chews have various names depending on the brand but are usually made of soft medical-grade silicone. (with no taste) By using such a soft item, you can avoid damaging the aligners. Also, you can achieve excellent tracking, with no space in between the aligner and the tops of your teeth.

Note: Chewies are reusable but not edible. Thus, after cleaning them, they will last for a few uses.

Simply place the small, soft tube between your teeth, and then you may gently bite down. Go around your mouth to push the aligners down to each tooth.

Another widely available option is Movements aligner mints. Unlike Chewies, these are edible and thus used only once. As a bonus, they help fight bad breath and dry mouth.

In a pinch, you may roll up a clean paper towel into a tube about the size of your small finger. Then, gently chew down on it the same as a Chewie. Afterward, throw it away.

By fully seating your aligners, you can help make your treatment more efficient. So, it’s worth taking a moment to ensure they are fully in place. With a new set of aligners, you may need to use a Chewie for a couple of days. Then, the set will fit easier as your teeth slowly move from the constant, gentle pressure.

To Remove: Start at the Back and Work Forward

To remove your aligners, use your finger to push the aligner up at the back teeth gently. Start at the back molars on the inside, gently pushing to loosen the aligner.

Do this on both sides until the aligners start coming out. Then, slowly work forward at an angle to the front teeth. Finally, gently lift the aligner out.

If you have attachments, you may need to very gently move the aligner a little back and forth to loosen it. Then, you can gently work the aligner free to remove it. Should the attachment come loose, contact us right away so that we can replace it.

Wear Aligners As Much as Possible

Invisalign comes out during treatment, so you can enjoy more of your favorite foods. Plus, you can brush and care for your teeth without wires in the way. However, to remain effective, you must wear aligners as much as possible, including at night.

By wearing your aligners 22 hours a day and making sure they are fully seated, you will achieve an amazing smile faster and more comfortably.
