Preparing for Orthodontic Treatment

Preparing for Orthodontic Treatment

Many patients in Mechanicstown, NY have made the wise decision to get their braces done here at the Bracesetters offices. Getting braces is a momentous event in anyone’s life, as it means an average of two years of treatment, and the resulting beautiful smile that makes it all worth it. Before you arrive at our offices though, here are some tips to help you prepare for the big day.

1. Customize your braces

If you haven’t already, ask Dr. Skrobola and Dr. Schlosser what is the best option for you. You can choose between traditional braces, clear removable aligners, or lingual braces that go behind your teeth so no one can see them, and other options.

If we choose traditional braces, you can also pick a color for them. Our specialist offices near Mechanicstown come with options of colored elastics that go on your braces. Perhaps you would want to have school spirit, show support for your favorite sports team, or just pick your own favorite color.

2. Stock up on braces-friendly food

Having braces means diet restrictions: eating crunchy foods may damage your braces, gum will be impossible to chew, and certain foods might get stuck in your teeth easily and require more cleaning than usual. Savor your last binge on these foods as you prepare to eat a diet of brace-friendly foods; but there is no need to despair, because Bracesetters-approved foods include fries, sandwiches, and pizza.

3. Be mentally prepared

Getting braces will for sure be a life changing event, both in the short term and in the long term. While in the short run, it may be a bit uncomfortable, you should focus on the long term benefits, such as better oral health and all the confidence that a better looking smile will bring you.

While Dr. Skrobola and Dr. Schlosser’s procedure is relatively simple “ gluing little brackets on you your teeth “ you will feel a short period of discomfort right after getting braces. Be mentally prepared for that first few days of irritation to the inside of your cheeks, sore teeth, and having to speak less and eat slowly. You can use wax to prevent the braces from scratching your cheeks. Hang in there, because it should pass within the week!
